Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Fossil Mold & Cast Specialist with a strong focus on preservation and a commitment to ongoing training. This critical role involves the creation of high-fidelity molds and casts of fossil specimens for research, exhibition, and educational purposes. The ideal candidate will possess foundational skills in molding and casting techniques, a keen eye for detail, and a passion for paleontological preservation. This position is designed to provide advanced training in specialized conservation methods for fossil replicas, ensuring the highest standards of accuracy and longevity. You will work closely with paleontologists, conservators, and exhibit designers to bring ancient life forms to new audiences.
Key Responsibilities
- Execute precise molding and casting procedures for a diverse range of fossil specimens, utilizing various materials such as silicone, plaster, epoxy, and resins.
- Prepare fossil specimens for molding, including cleaning, minor repairs, and stabilization.
- Perform detailed finishing work on casts, including trimming, patching, painting, and assembly to achieve lifelike replicas.
- Adhere strictly to preservation protocols and best practices to ensure the long-term safety and integrity of original specimens during the molding process.
- Participate actively in ongoing specialized training programs related to advanced molding techniques, material science, and conservation-grade replica production.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe laboratory environment, ensuring proper handling and storage of materials and tools.
- Document all molding and casting processes, materials used, and any observations about specimen condition.
- Collaborate with curatorial, research, and exhibition teams to understand project requirements and deliver high-quality products on schedule.
- Assist in the research and development of new molding and casting techniques and materials for improved accuracy and preservation.
- Operate and maintain specialized equipment used in the molding and casting process.
Required Skills
- Proven experience with molding and casting techniques (e.g., silicone, plaster, resin)
- Strong manual dexterity and fine motor skills

Preferred Qualifications
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts, Sculpture, Museum Studies, Geology, Paleontology, or a related field

- Familiarity with various painting and finishing techniques for realistic replication
- Knowledge of material science related to molding and casting compounds
- Experience with 3D scanning and printing technologies for replica production
