Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and versatile General Hand to join our Facilities team at York University. This vital role involves performing a wide array of duties to ensure our campus facilities are well-maintained, clean, and safe for students, faculty, and visitors. Key Responsibilities

  • Perform routine cleaning and tidying of various campus buildings, including classrooms, offices, and common areas.
  • Assist with minor maintenance tasks, such as light bulb replacement, basic plumbing checks, and furniture adjustments.
  • Support event setups and tear-downs, including moving tables, chairs, and equipment.
  • Assist with groundskeeping duties, including litter pick-up, light landscaping, and snow removal during winter months.
  • Transport materials, supplies, and equipment between different campus locations.
  • Identify and report maintenance issues or safety hazards to supervisors.
  • Operate basic cleaning and maintenance equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Adhere to all health, safety, and environmental regulations and university policies.

Required Skills

  • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting, bending, and standing for extended periods.
  • Basic understanding of general maintenance and cleaning procedures.
  • Strong work ethic and reliability.
  • Ability to follow instructions and work effectively as part of a team.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Attention to detail and a proactive approach to problem-solving.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in a similar general hand, maintenance, or facilities support role, particularly in a school or university setting.
  • Valid G-class driver's license with a clean driving record.
  • Familiarity with health and safety protocols in a large institutional environment.
  • First Aid and/or WHMIS certification.
