Job Description
We are seeking a diligent and safety-focused Hazardous Materials Chemist to join our team in Visalia, CA. In this critical role, you will be responsible for ensuring the safe handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous materials, while maintaining strict compliance with all relevant local, state, and federal regulations. This position requires strong analytical skills, a thorough understanding of chemical properties, and a proactive approach to safety and environmental stewardship. You will play a vital part in our commitment to operational excellence and environmental protection.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform chemical analysis, characterization, and identification of various hazardous and non-hazardous materials using standard laboratory techniques and instrumentation.
- Ensure strict compliance with all local, state, and federal hazardous waste regulations, including RCRA, DOT, OSHA, and California-specific environmental laws.
- Develop, implement, and enforce safety procedures and protocols for the handling, storage, processing, and disposal of hazardous substances.
- Conduct thorough site inspections and audits to identify potential hazards, ensure adherence to safety guidelines, and recommend corrective actions.
- Prepare detailed technical reports, maintain accurate records of chemical inventories, waste manifests, and regulatory documentation.
- Provide comprehensive training and guidance to operational staff on hazardous materials handling, safety procedures, and emergency response protocols.
- Act as a primary responder to chemical spills or incidents, offering expert guidance and support for containment, assessment, and remediation efforts.
- Collaborate effectively with regulatory agencies during inspections, audits, and permitting processes, providing all necessary documentation and information.
- Assist in the development and implementation of environmental management systems and continuous improvement initiatives.
Required Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Environmental Science, Chemical Engineering, or a closely related scientific field.
- Demonstrable knowledge of hazardous waste regulations (RCRA, DOT, OSHA, state-specific environmental laws).
- Proficiency in various chemical analysis techniques and familiarity with common laboratory instrumentation.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly articulate complex scientific and regulatory information.
- Strong problem-solving and analytical abilities, with meticulous attention to detail.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
- Commitment to maintaining a high standard of safety and environmental compliance.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in Chemistry, Environmental Science, or a relevant scientific discipline.
- HAZWOPER 40-hour certification (or ability to obtain upon hire).
- Experience with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS).
- Prior work experience in an industrial, waste management, or environmental consulting setting, specifically dealing with hazardous materials.
- Familiarity with California Environmental Protection Agency (CalEPA) regulations and specific state hazardous waste codes.
