Job Description
Amgen is seeking a highly motivated and skilled ICP-MS Chemist to join our analytical chemistry team in Thousand Oaks. The successful candidate will be responsible for performing trace metals analysis using Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) to support various stages of drug development, manufacturing, and quality control. This role requires a strong understanding of ICP-MS principles, method development, data interpretation, and instrument troubleshooting. You will contribute to ensuring the quality and safety of our innovative biopharmaceutical products.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate and maintain ICP-MS instrumentation for routine and non-routine analysis of raw materials, in-process samples, and finished products.
- Develop, validate, and optimize ICP-MS methods for trace elemental impurities according to regulatory guidelines (e.g., USP <232>, <233>, ICH Q3D).
- Perform accurate and precise quantitative and qualitative analysis of metals in complex matrices.
- Interpret analytical data, troubleshoot instrumentation issues, and identify root causes of discrepancies.
- Document all experimental work, data, and results meticulously in electronic lab notebooks and LIMS.
- Ensure compliance with GxP regulations, internal SOPs, and safety guidelines.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams including R&D, manufacturing, and quality assurance.
- Maintain a high level of technical expertise through continuous learning and training.
Required Skills
- Proficiency in operating and troubleshooting ICP-MS instruments (e.g., Agilent, PerkinElmer, Thermo Scientific).
- Strong understanding of trace elemental analysis principles, sample preparation techniques, and interference mitigation.
- Experience with method development and validation for ICP-MS applications.
- Ability to interpret complex analytical data and draw sound scientific conclusions.
- Knowledge of GxP regulations (GLP, GMP) and pharmacopoeial requirements (USP, EP, JP) related to elemental impurities.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong problem-solving and critical thinking abilities.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in Analytical Chemistry, Chemistry, or a related scientific discipline.
- Experience in a pharmaceutical, biotechnology, or contract research organization (CRO) laboratory setting.
- Familiarity with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) and electronic lab notebooks (ELN).
- Experience with other analytical techniques such as ICP-OES, AA, or XRF.
- Proven track record of successful method transfers and instrument qualifications.
