Job Description

We are seeking a visionary and experienced Library Director / Head Archivist to lead the strategic development and operational management of our esteemed University Library and its archival collections. This pivotal role involves overseeing all aspects of library and archival services, including collection development, digital initiatives, preservation, user services, and staff management. The successful candidate will drive innovation, enhance accessibility, and ensure the library remains a central pillar of LMU Munich’s academic excellence. Key Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic leadership and vision for all library and archival services, aligning them with the university's mission and academic goals.
  • Oversee the development, management, and preservation of diverse collections, including physical and digital archives, rare books, and contemporary resources.
  • Lead and mentor a team of librarians, archivists, and support staff, fostering a collaborative and professional work environment.
  • Manage the library's budget, resources, and facilities effectively and efficiently.
  • Drive the implementation of new technologies and digital initiatives to enhance access to information and improve user experience.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with university departments, faculty, students, and external partners.
  • Ensure compliance with national and international archival and library standards and best practices.
  • Represent the library and archives at university-wide committees, national, and international forums.
  • Develop and implement robust preservation strategies for both physical and digital materials.

Required Skills

  • Master's degree in Library Science, Archival Studies, or a related field from an accredited institution.
  • Minimum of 8 years of progressive leadership experience in a major academic library or archival institution.
  • Demonstrated experience in strategic planning, budget management, and staff supervision.
  • Profound knowledge of current trends and best practices in library and archival management, including digital preservation and open access initiatives.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills.
  • Fluency in English (written and spoken) is essential, as this role supports international collaboration.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD in a relevant discipline.
  • Working knowledge of German or willingness to learn.
  • Experience with international academic collaborations and grant writing.
  • Familiarity with European higher education systems and research landscapes.
  • Demonstrated success in fundraising or securing external funding for library and archival projects.
