Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled and enthusiastic Percussion Specialist to join our high school marching band program on a contract basis. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in marching percussion and a passion for working with high school students. This role involves coaching, instructing, and mentoring percussion students (battery and front ensemble) to achieve musical excellence and precise performance within the context of a competitive marching band environment. The Percussion Specialist will work closely with the band director to implement instructional plans, refine techniques, and contribute to the overall success and spirit of the marching band program.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide expert instruction in all aspects of marching percussion, including battery (snare, tenor, bass drums, cymbals) and front ensemble (mallets, auxiliary percussion).
  • Develop and implement engaging rehearsal plans focused on technique, timing, musicality, and visual precision.
  • Assist in the arrangement and adaptation of percussion parts for marching band shows.
  • Lead sectionals and full ensemble rehearsals, providing constructive feedback and motivation.
  • Teach proper instrument maintenance and care.
  • Collaborate with the Head Band Director and other instructional staff on show design, marching drill integration, and overall program development.
  • Attend all scheduled rehearsals, performances, competitions, and band camps as required by the contract.
  • Mentor students in leadership, discipline, and teamwork.

Required Skills

  • Demonstrated expertise in marching percussion performance and instruction.
  • Strong understanding of percussion pedagogy for high school students.
  • Excellent musicality, rhythm, and ear training skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret musical scores, particularly percussion notation.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills for working with students, parents, and staff.
  • Proven ability to motivate and inspire young musicians.
  • Reliable transportation to various school sites within the district.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Music Education, Performance, or a related field.
  • Previous experience as a Percussion Specialist or instructor with a high school or collegiate marching band.
  • Experience in percussion arranging or show design software.
  • Knowledge of current trends and techniques in competitive marching band.
  • CPR and First Aid certification.
