Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Plastic Processing Chemist with a strong focus on recycling and environmental sustainability to join our R&D team in Reno, Nevada. In this role, you will be instrumental in developing and optimizing processes for the recycling and upcycling of various plastic materials. You will apply your expertise in polymer chemistry and material science to innovate sustainable solutions, improve material properties of recycled plastics, and contribute to our circular economy goals. This position requires hands-on laboratory work, analytical testing, and collaboration with cross-functional teams to bring new technologies from concept to implementation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct research and development on new and existing plastic recycling technologies and processes.
  • Develop and optimize chemical and physical processes for the sorting, purification, and transformation of plastic waste into valuable materials.
  • Analyze the chemical and physical properties of virgin and recycled plastic materials using advanced analytical techniques (e.g., FTIR, DSC, TGA, GPC, mechanical testing).
  • Design and execute experiments, meticulously record data, and interpret results to drive process improvements and material innovation.
  • Collaborate with engineering, manufacturing, and sustainability teams to scale up processes and integrate new technologies.
  • Contribute to patent applications, technical reports, and scientific publications.
  • Ensure all work is conducted in compliance with safety regulations and environmental standards.
  • Stay abreast of the latest advancements in polymer science, recycling technologies, and sustainability trends.

Required Skills

  • Ph.D. or M.S. in Polymer Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Minimum 3 years of hands-on experience in plastic processing, polymer synthesis, or materials characterization.
  • Demonstrated expertise in polymer chemistry, including structure-property relationships and degradation mechanisms.
  • Proficiency in common analytical techniques for polymer characterization (e.g., FTIR, DSC, TGA, GPC, DMA, Rheology).
  • Strong understanding of various plastic recycling methods (mechanical, chemical, dissolution).
  • Experience with process optimization and experimental design (DOE).
  • Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced R&D environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with pilot plant or scale-up operations for polymer processing.
  • Knowledge of circular economy principles and life cycle assessment (LCA).
  • Familiarity with industrial standards and regulations pertaining to plastics and recycling.
  • Experience with polymer blends, composites, or additives for performance enhancement.
  • Proficiency in statistical software for data analysis (e.g., JMP, Minitab).
