Job Description
The City of Pasco Public Works Department is seeking highly motivated and safety-conscious individuals to join our team as Temporary Salt Spreader Drivers for the upcoming winter season. This is a critical, temporary role designed to address high demand for snow and ice control operations. Successful candidates will be responsible for operating salt spreading equipment on various city roadways during adverse winter weather conditions, often requiring work during irregular hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays. This position plays a vital role in ensuring public safety and maintaining essential transportation routes during periods of severe weather. The role requires adherence to strict safety protocols, efficient operation of specialized equipment, and a strong commitment to public service.
Key Responsibilities
- Safely operate large trucks equipped with salt spreading and snowplow attachments.
- Apply de-icing agents (salt, sand, or brine mixtures) to city streets according to established routes and guidelines.
- Monitor road conditions and adjust spreading techniques as necessary to ensure effective treatment.
- Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections of vehicles and equipment, reporting any mechanical issues promptly.
- Maintain accurate logs of routes, materials used, and hours worked.
- Adhere strictly to all traffic laws, safety regulations, and departmental policies.
- Assist with other winter maintenance tasks as assigned, which may include manual shoveling or minor equipment adjustments.
- Communicate effectively with dispatch and supervisors regarding progress, road conditions, and any hazards.
Required Skills
- Valid Class A or B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with an air brake endorsement.
- Clean driving record free of major infractions for the past three years.
- Ability to operate heavy equipment safely and effectively in challenging weather conditions.
- Strong commitment to safety protocols and procedures.
- Physical ability to perform manual labor as needed, including lifting up to 50 lbs.
- Availability to work irregular hours, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays, often on short notice, especially during winter storm events.
- Basic mechanical aptitude for minor equipment checks and maintenance.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience operating salt spreading trucks, snowplows, or similar heavy-duty winter maintenance equipment.
- Familiarity with Pasco city street layouts and specific snow/ice control routes.
- Experience working in a public works or municipal environment.
- High school diploma or GED.
