Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and proactive School Grounds Caretaker / Handyman to join our operations team. This pivotal role involves the upkeep and maintenance of our school grounds and facilities, ensuring a safe, clean, and appealing environment for our students, staff, and visitors. The position offers term-time working options, providing excellent work-life balance for the right candidate. You will be responsible for a variety of tasks, from grounds maintenance to general handyman duties, contributing significantly to the smooth running of the school.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform regular grounds maintenance tasks including mowing, strimming, weeding, leaf clearing, and general tidying of outdoor areas.
- Undertake minor repairs and maintenance across the school site, including basic plumbing, carpentry, painting, and general DIY tasks.
- Conduct routine checks of facilities and equipment to ensure they are safe and in good working order, reporting any significant issues.
- Assist with the setup and clear-down for school events, assemblies, and external bookings.
- Ensure pathways, car parks, and entrances are kept clear and safe, especially during adverse weather conditions.
- Manage waste disposal and recycling effectively, ensuring school bins are emptied and areas are kept clean.
- Support the Head Caretaker with security duties, including locking and unlocking procedures as required.
- Maintain tools and equipment in a safe and serviceable condition.
- Adhere to all health and safety regulations and school policies.
Required Skills
- Proven practical experience in grounds maintenance or a related trade.
- Competence in using a range of grounds maintenance machinery (e.g., mowers, strimmers).
- Good general handyman skills, capable of undertaking minor repairs and maintenance tasks.
- Ability to work independently and manage time effectively.
- Strong attention to detail and a proactive approach to problem-solving.
- A full UK driving license.
- Excellent reliability and a strong work ethic.
- Must be eligible for a satisfactory Enhanced DBS check.
Preferred Qualifications
- Relevant vocational qualification (e.g., NVQ in Horticulture, Building Maintenance, or similar).
- Experience working in a school or educational environment.
- First Aid at Work qualification.
- Basic IT skills for reporting and communication.
