Job Description
We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated Senior Formulation Chemist to join our dynamic R&D team in Memphis, TN. In this role, you will lead complex formulation projects, drive innovation, and manage a small team of chemists dedicated to developing cutting-edge materials and products. You will be instrumental in conceptualizing, developing, and optimizing chemical formulations from initial concept to commercialization, ensuring products meet stringent performance, regulatory, and sustainability requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage multiple formulation chemistry projects from ideation through commercialization, ensuring timely delivery and adherence to project goals.
- Supervise, mentor, and develop a team of junior and mid-level chemists, fostering a collaborative and high-performance work environment.
- Design, execute, and interpret complex experiments to develop novel formulations, optimize existing ones, and troubleshoot formulation-related issues.
- Conduct advanced characterization of raw materials and finished products using a variety of analytical techniques.
- Collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams including manufacturing, marketing, sales, and regulatory affairs.
- Prepare detailed technical reports, presentations, and patent disclosures to document research findings and intellectual property.
- Ensure all laboratory activities comply with safety protocols, quality standards, and environmental regulations.
- Stay abreast of industry trends, new technologies, and competitive landscapes to identify opportunities for innovation.
Required Skills
- Minimum of 7 years of hands-on experience in chemical formulation development within an industrial R&D setting.
- Proven leadership experience, including direct supervision or significant project leadership roles.
- Expertise in designing and executing complex experimental plans (DOE) and interpreting data.
- Strong understanding of polymer chemistry, colloid chemistry, surface science, or related fields.
- Proficiency with analytical techniques such as spectroscopy (FTIR, NMR), chromatography (GC, HPLC), rheology, and thermal analysis (DSC, TGA).
- Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and critical thinking abilities.
- Superior written and verbal communication skills, capable of presenting complex technical information clearly.
- Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or a closely related discipline.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's or Ph.D. in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or Materials Science.
- Experience with scale-up processes and technology transfer from lab to manufacturing.
- Knowledge of intellectual property generation and patent application processes.
- Familiarity with regulatory requirements relevant to specialty chemicals (e.g., REACH, TSCA).
- Experience in specific application areas such as coatings, adhesives, personal care, or advanced materials.
