Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Specialty Pharmacy Technician with a strong focus on Oncology and Biotech medications to join our dedicated team in Cedar Rapids, IA. In this crucial role, you will support our pharmacists in dispensing complex and high-cost specialty medications, ensuring patient safety, adherence, and optimal therapeutic outcomes. This position requires a technician who thrives in a fast-paced environment, possesses excellent organizational skills, and is passionate about contributing to life-changing care for patients with chronic and rare conditions, particularly in oncology. You will play an integral part in managing prior authorizations, coordinating with insurance providers, and educating patients on their medication regimens.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist pharmacists in the preparation and dispensing of specialty medications, with a strong emphasis on oncology and biotech therapies.
- Manage medication inventory, including ordering, receiving, stocking, and rotating stock, ensuring compliance with storage requirements for high-value drugs.
- Process patient prescriptions accurately and efficiently, including data entry, insurance billing, and prior authorization submissions.
- Communicate effectively with patients, healthcare providers, and insurance companies regarding medication status, financial assistance programs, and refills.
- Provide patient education and support under the direct supervision of a pharmacist, focusing on medication adherence, administration, and potential side effects.
- Maintain precise and thorough documentation of all activities in accordance with regulatory standards and company policies.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives and ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations pertaining to pharmacy practice.
- Resolve insurance rejections and navigate complex benefit structures to minimize patient out-of-pocket costs.
- Collaborate with the interdisciplinary healthcare team to optimize patient care plans.
Required Skills
- Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) certification by PTCB or NHA.
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience as a Pharmacy Technician, with at least 1 year in a specialty pharmacy, hospital, or oncology setting.
- Proficiency in pharmacy software systems and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment.
- Knowledge of medical terminology and pharmaceutical calculations.
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree in a related field.
- Experience with oncology-specific medications and protocols.
- Familiarity with prior authorization processes for specialty drugs.
- Experience with Epic or similar electronic health record systems.
