Job Description

We are seeking a diligent and meticulous Surgical Instrument Sterilization Tech to join our hospital’s back-office team. In this critical role, you will be responsible for ensuring that all surgical instruments are properly cleaned, disinfected, sterilized, and packaged for use in operating rooms and other clinical areas. This position requires strict adherence to infection control standards and a keen eye for detail to maintain a safe and sterile environment for our patients and staff. While primarily a back-office function, your work directly impacts patient safety and surgical outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Decontaminate, clean, and sterilize surgical instruments and equipment according to established protocols and manufacturer instructions.
  • Operate and maintain sterilization equipment, including autoclaves and other machinery.
  • Inspect instruments for functionality, cleanliness, and completeness, reporting any discrepancies.
  • Assemble surgical trays and packs accurately and efficiently.
  • Maintain accurate records of sterilization cycles, instrument inventory, and expiry dates.
  • Adhere to all hospital policies, safety regulations, and infection control standards.
  • Assist with inventory management and ordering of sterilization supplies.
  • Collaborate effectively with surgical teams and other hospital departments.

Required Skills

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated ability to follow detailed instructions and protocols precisely.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.
  • Basic computer proficiency for record-keeping.
  • Physical ability to stand for extended periods, lift moderate weights, and perform repetitive tasks.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certification as a Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician (SPD Tech) or Central Sterile Supply (CSSD) certification (e.g., CRCST, CBSPD).
  • Previous experience in a healthcare or sterile processing environment.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and surgical instrumentation.
  • Understanding of AAMI and other relevant sterilization standards.
