Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Process Development Chemist to join our dynamic R&D team in Louisville, KY. In this critical role, you will be responsible for the development, optimization, and scale-up of chemical processes from laboratory to pilot plant and ultimately to full manufacturing scale. You will work closely with research chemists, engineers, and manufacturing personnel to ensure robust, efficient, and safe processes that meet product specifications and production targets. This position requires a strong background in synthetic organic or inorganic chemistry, process optimization, and a proven track record in manufacturing scale-up.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and optimize new chemical processes for active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), specialty chemicals, or advanced materials.
- Conduct experiments at laboratory and pilot scales to evaluate reaction conditions, raw material sources, and process parameters.
- Perform in-depth analysis of process data, troubleshoot issues, and implement solutions to improve yield, purity, and efficiency.
- Collaborate with process engineers to facilitate successful technology transfer from R&D to manufacturing.
- Develop and validate analytical methods for in-process control and final product testing.
- Prepare detailed technical reports, process descriptions, and operating procedures.
- Ensure all process development activities comply with safety, environmental, and quality regulations (e.g., GMP, ISO).
- Stay current with scientific and technological advancements in process chemistry and manufacturing.
Required Skills
- Ph.D. or M.S. in Organic Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related field.
- Minimum of 5 years of industrial experience in process development and manufacturing scale-up.
- Proven expertise in reaction optimization, statistical experimental design (DoE), and process analytical technologies (PAT).
- Strong understanding of chemical kinetics, thermodynamics, and mass transfer principles.
- Proficiency with analytical techniques such as HPLC, GC, NMR, FTIR, and spectroscopy.
- Excellent problem-solving, communication, and teamwork skills.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with automated synthesis platforms and high-throughput experimentation.
- Knowledge of Lean Six Sigma methodologies.
- Familiarity with regulatory guidelines for chemical manufacturing (e.g., FDA, REACH).
- Experience in a GMP-regulated environment.
