Job Description
We are seeking a diligent and detail-oriented Tally Man to join our logistics and shipping operations in Norfolk, VA. In this crucial role, you will be responsible for accurately counting, verifying, and documenting cargo during loading, unloading, and transit phases. This position is vital for ensuring the integrity of our inventory and the efficiency of our shipping processes. The ideal candidate will have a strong commitment to accuracy, safety, and teamwork within a fast-paced port environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Accurately count and record incoming and outgoing cargo, comparing physical counts to shipping documents (manifests, bills of lading).
- Identify and report discrepancies, damages, or shortages immediately to supervisors and relevant departments.
- Inspect cargo for proper labeling, packaging, and general condition.
- Maintain clear and concise records of all movements and conditions using designated forms or digital systems.
- Collaborate effectively with warehouse staff, equipment operators, and truck drivers to ensure smooth cargo flow.
- Adhere to all safety protocols and company policies, especially concerning heavy equipment and hazardous materials.
- Assist with inventory checks and stock reconciliation as required.
- Operate basic hand tools or equipment if necessary for cargo handling (e.g., pallet jacks, hand trucks).
- Communicate status updates and potential issues clearly to team members and management.
Required Skills
- Proven ability to perform accurate counts and record keeping.
- Strong attention to detail and observational skills.
- Basic mathematical skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication).
- Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Physical stamina to stand, walk, lift (up to 50 lbs), and work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- High level of reliability and punctuality.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience (6+ months) in a logistics, warehouse, shipping, or port operations role.
- Familiarity with shipping documentation (e.g., bills of lading, manifests).
- Basic computer literacy for data entry.
- Forklift certification or experience operating other material handling equipment.
