Job Description

The John Cotton Dana Library at Rutgers University – Newark is seeking enthusiastic and reliable Weekend Student Library Assistants to join our dedicated team. This part-time position offers a unique ‘study-friendly’ environment, allowing you to balance work responsibilities with your academic pursuits. You will play a crucial role in maintaining library operations, assisting patrons, and ensuring a welcoming and organized space during weekend hours. This is an excellent opportunity for students to gain valuable work experience in a professional setting while contributing to the academic success of their peers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide excellent customer service to library patrons, assisting with general inquiries, locating materials, and navigating library resources.
  • Assist with circulation desk duties, including checking materials in and out, processing holds, and managing patron accounts.
  • Reshelve library materials accurately and efficiently, maintaining the organization and neatness of library collections.
  • Monitor library spaces to ensure a quiet and conducive study environment.
  • Assist with basic technical support for library equipment (e.g., printers, computers) and report issues to appropriate staff.
  • Perform opening and closing procedures for designated library areas.
  • Support special projects and administrative tasks as assigned by supervisory staff.

Required Skills

  • Currently enrolled as a student at Rutgers University – Newark or an equivalent higher education institution.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Basic computer proficiency and ability to learn new software.
  • Reliability and punctuality for scheduled shifts.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous customer service experience.
  • Familiarity with library systems or academic environments.
  • Ability to lift and move up to 20 pounds.
  • Experience with Google Workspace applications.
