Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Hospital Pharmacy Technician to join our dynamic pharmacy team in a clinical role, specifically for the night shift. This position offers a night shift differential and plays a crucial part in supporting our pharmacists and ensuring timely and accurate medication delivery to patients. The successful candidate will perform a variety of technical duties related to medication preparation, distribution, and inventory management within a fast-paced hospital environment, focusing on clinical support activities during overnight hours. This includes managing medication automation, sterile and non-sterile compounding, and providing excellent customer service to nurses and other healthcare providers.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare, compound, and dispense medications accurately under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist, including sterile products using aseptic technique.
- Manage and maintain medication inventory, including ordering, receiving, stocking, and rotating drugs to ensure availability and minimize waste.
- Assist pharmacists with medication reconciliation, patient medication histories, and drug information requests during night shifts.
- Operate and troubleshoot automated dispensing cabinets (e.g., Pyxis, Omnicell) and other pharmacy technology.
- Conduct daily quality assurance checks, including refrigerator temperature monitoring and crash cart inspections.
- Provide excellent customer service to healthcare professionals, responding promptly and accurately to medication-related inquiries.
- Participate in the training and orientation of new pharmacy technicians and students as needed.
- Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and hospital regulations and policies related to pharmacy practice and medication safety.
- Perform controlled substance inventory and documentation as per regulatory requirements.
Required Skills
- Current Massachusetts Pharmacy Technician registration
- Certification by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or equivalent
- Minimum of 1 year of experience as a Pharmacy Technician in a hospital or acute care setting
- Demonstrated ability to perform sterile compounding using aseptic technique
- Proficiency in pharmaceutical calculations and medication safety practices
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a demanding environment
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate's degree in a related field
- Experience with hospital pharmacy information systems (e.g., Epic, Cerner)
- Familiarity with automated dispensing systems (e.g., Pyxis, Omnicell)
- Experience with IV admixture and chemotherapy preparation
- Previous experience working night shifts in a healthcare setting
