Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and robust Badlands Paleontology Tech to join our dynamic field team. This role is crucial for our ongoing regional field expeditions, particularly in challenging badlands environments across Southern California. The successful candidate will be involved in all aspects of paleontological fieldwork, from prospecting and excavation to data collection and preliminary fossil preparation. This position requires significant physical stamina, a keen eye for detail, and a passion for ancient life. You will work closely with lead paleontologists and volunteers, contributing directly to significant scientific discoveries.

Key Responsibilities

  • Participate in regional paleontological fieldwork, including prospecting, excavation, and recovery of fossil specimens in diverse geological settings, particularly badlands.
  • Accurately record stratigraphic, geologic, and taphonomic data using field notes, photographs, and GPS equipment.
  • Perform preliminary fossil preparation and stabilization in the field to ensure safe transport to the laboratory.
  • Maintain and organize field equipment, vehicles, and supplies, ensuring readiness for expeditions.
  • Adhere to strict safety protocols and ethical standards for fossil collection and site preservation.
  • Collaborate effectively with team members, volunteers, and local stakeholders.
  • Assist with data entry and basic report writing post-fieldwork as needed.

Required Skills

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in paleontological or archaeological field methods and techniques.
  • Proficiency with GPS devices, topographic maps, and basic surveying tools.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify common fossil types and geological formations.
  • Strong physical stamina and ability to work effectively in extreme weather conditions and rugged terrain for extended periods.
  • Excellent observational skills and attention to detail for data recording.
  • Valid California Driver’s License and clean driving record.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs and perform strenuous physical tasks.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Paleontology, Geology, Archaeology, or a related field.
  • Previous experience working specifically in badlands or arid environments.
  • Knowledge of California's Cenozoic and Mesozoic stratigraphy and fossil fauna.
  • Certification in Wilderness First Aid or equivalent.
  • Experience with digital mapping software (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS).
