Job Description
The University of Notre Dame Museum of Biodiversity is seeking an enthusiastic and detail-oriented High School Student Paleo Aide to join our team. This part-time position offers a unique opportunity for a motivated student to gain hands-on experience in a museum setting, specifically supporting our paleontology and natural history collections. You will assist museum staff with various tasks crucial to the preservation, organization, and accessibility of our invaluable specimens. This role is ideal for students with a budding interest in geology, biology, paleontology, or museum studies.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with the careful cataloging and numbering of fossil specimens and related artifacts.
- Help organize and rehouse collection materials, ensuring proper storage and environmental conditions.
- Support the preparation of specimens for display or research, under direct supervision.
- Clean and maintain laboratory and collection areas, ensuring a safe and orderly environment.
- Conduct basic research tasks, such as data entry and image processing for collection records.
- Assist with educational programming and public outreach events related to paleontology, as needed.
- Adhere to all museum policies and safety guidelines.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding collection data and research projects.
Required Skills
- Currently enrolled in high school.
- Strong interest in science, history, or museums.
- Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Ability to follow instructions meticulously.
- Reliable, punctual, and a strong work ethic.
- Ability to lift up to 20 pounds and perform tasks requiring standing, bending, and reaching.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous volunteer experience in a museum, library, or educational setting.
- Basic computer skills (data entry, word processing).
- Demonstrated curiosity about paleontology, geology, or biology.
- Availability to work consistent part-time hours, typically after school and/or weekends.
