Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic Special Effects (SFX) Workshop Assistant to join our dynamic team. This entry-level to junior role is perfect for an individual with a passion for creative fabrication, model making, and practical effects. You will be instrumental in supporting our experienced SFX technicians in all aspects of workshop operations, from prop construction and set dressing to maintaining tools and ensuring a safe working environment. This is a hands-on opportunity to learn from the best and contribute to exciting projects across various media.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist senior technicians with the fabrication and assembly of props, models, and practical effects rigs.
- Prepare materials, tools, and workspaces for various SFX projects.
- Support on-set or on-location SFX setups and strike-downs, ensuring all equipment is handled carefully.
- Perform general workshop duties including cleaning, organizing, and maintaining tools and equipment.
- Assist with material inventory management and ordering when required.
- Learn and apply safe working practices for all workshop machinery, tools, and chemicals.
- Contribute creative ideas and solutions to project challenges.
- Undertake basic repairs and maintenance of SFX equipment.
- Follow instructions diligently and work effectively as part of a collaborative team.
Required Skills
- Proven interest and enthusiasm for special effects, prop making, or creative fabrication.
- Basic knowledge of various materials suchates, woods, plastics, and resins.
- Proficiency with basic hand tools and a willingness to learn power tool operation.
- Strong attention to detail and a commitment to quality craftsmanship.
- Ability to follow instructions accurately and work independently when necessary.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and a proactive attitude.
- Physical stamina and ability to lift and move equipment as required.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- A portfolio showcasing relevant projects (e.g., models, props, sculptures).
- Formal education or vocational training in art, design, theatre technical arts, or a related field.
- Experience with workshop machinery such as saws, drills, or grinders.
- Knowledge of health and safety regulations within a workshop environment.
- Driving license.
