Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and knowledgeable Music Librarian to join our team, supporting the various resident companies and visiting artists at the AT&T Performing Arts Center. This vital role is responsible for the comprehensive management of all musical scores, parts, and related materials. The Music Librarian will ensure the efficient organization, acquisition, and distribution of music resources, playing a crucial part in the successful execution of our diverse performance schedule. This position requires a passion for music, meticulous organizational skills, and a deep understanding of music theory and history.

Key Responsibilities

  • Catalog, classify, and organize all musical scores, orchestral parts, and chamber music according to established library standards.
  • Manage the acquisition process for new music, including purchasing, rental, and copyright compliance.
  • Prepare, mark, and distribute orchestral and choral parts to musicians and conductors for rehearsals and performances.
  • Maintain and inventory the physical and digital music collection, ensuring all materials are in excellent condition and readily accessible.
  • Conduct research on various editions of musical works, performance history, and interpretative practices as needed by artistic staff.
  • Oversee the care, repair, and binding of music materials.
  • Liaise with conductors, artistic directors, and musicians to anticipate and fulfill their music-related needs.
  • Assist with archival duties related to performance programs and historical musical documents.
  • Manage borrowing and lending arrangements with other music libraries and institutions.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Music, Library Science, or a related field with a strong emphasis on music.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in a music library, orchestral library, or similar arts organization.
  • Proficiency in music cataloging principles and classification systems (e.g., LCC, MARC).
  • Extensive knowledge of classical music repertoire, music history, and music theory.
  • Exceptional organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail.
  • Ability to read music notation accurately and efficiently.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively with artistic and administrative staff.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Library and Information Science (MLS/MLIS) with a specialization in music librarianship.
  • Experience with music notation software (e.g., Sibelius, Finale).
  • Familiarity with multiple languages relevant to musical terminology (e.g., Italian, German, French).
  • Prior experience working directly with professional musicians and conductors.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle delicate and rare musical materials.
