Job Description

Are you a motivated 14-year-old looking for your first job experience and eager to contribute to your community? The YMCA of Santa Maria Valley is seeking enthusiastic Teen Referee Assistants to support our youth sports programs on weekends. This entry-level position is perfect for individuals who love sports, enjoy working with children, and want to learn about sports officiating. You will play a vital role in ensuring a fun, fair, and positive experience for all young athletes. This is a fantastic opportunity to gain valuable work experience, develop leadership skills, and earn weekend pay.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist lead referees in managing youth sports games, including basketball, soccer, or flag football.
  • Help set up and break down sports equipment before and after games.
  • Monitor game play for fair conduct and adherence to basic rules, under direct supervision.
  • Communicate respectfully and clearly with young players, coaches, and parents.
  • Support a positive and encouraging atmosphere for all participants.
  • Retrieve stray balls and maintain game flow.
  • Learn basic rules and officiating techniques from experienced staff.

Required Skills

  • Must be 14 years old.
  • Genuine interest in youth sports and working with children.
  • Ability to follow instructions and work as part of a team.
  • Reliable and punctual for weekend shifts.
  • Excellent communication and and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to stand and move for extended periods during games.
  • Enthusiastic and positive attitude.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous participation in youth sports leagues.
  • Basic understanding of common sports rules (e.g., soccer, basketball).
  • First Aid/CPR certification (or willingness to obtain).
