Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Paleontology Research Assistant to join our thriving Department of Geoscience. This full-time position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge paleontological research projects focused on fossil discovery, preparation, and analysis. The successful candidate will work closely with faculty, graduate students, and fellow researchers, both in the lab and potentially in the field. This role is ideal for an individual with a passion for ancient life and a meticulous approach to scientific investigation. You will be instrumental in the documentation and preservation of significant fossil specimens, playing a key role in ongoing and future discoveries that shape our understanding of evolutionary history.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist faculty and researchers with all aspects of paleontological field expeditions, including excavation, data collection, and specimen recovery.
- Perform laboratory tasks such as fossil preparation (cleaning, repairing, consolidating), cataloging, and basic morphological analysis.
- Maintain meticulous records of specimens, fieldwork, and experimental data using digital and physical systems.
- Operate and maintain specialized paleontological equipment and tools, ensuring their proper functionality and safety.
- Conduct literature reviews and assist with data entry and preliminary statistical analysis for research projects.
- Prepare preliminary reports, presentations, and contribute to manuscript preparation as directed by principal investigators.
- Ensure compliance with all safety protocols and institutional guidelines in both field and lab settings.
- Assist in the organization and maintenance of the department's fossil collections and laboratory spaces.
Required Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Paleontology, Geology, Biology, or a related field.
- Demonstrated knowledge of paleontological principles and practices.
- Proficiency in basic laboratory techniques and scientific data recording.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a collaborative research team.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Physical ability to perform fieldwork in various conditions, including lifting and carrying equipment.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience (at least 6 months) in a paleontological lab or field setting.
- Experience with fossil preparation techniques and tools.
- Familiarity with geological mapping software (e.g., ArcGIS) or statistical software (e.g., R, SPSS).
- Valid driver's license and ability to operate university vehicles for fieldwork.
- First Aid/CPR certification.
