Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Plastic Processing Chemist with a strong focus on recycling and ecological solutions to join our R&D team in Fremont, CA. In this role, you will be instrumental in developing and optimizing processes for the recycling and upcycling of various plastic waste streams. You will work on innovative projects aimed at creating new materials with enhanced properties from recycled content, contributing directly to our circular economy goals. This position requires a deep understanding of polymer chemistry, processing techniques, and a passion for sustainable solutions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and execute experiments for the chemical and physical processing of post-consumer and industrial plastic waste.
  • Develop and optimize polymer blending, compounding, and extrusion processes for recycled materials.
  • Characterize the properties of recycled plastics and new composite materials using techniques such as spectroscopy, chromatography, and mechanical testing.
  • Collaborate with engineering, production, and business teams to scale up laboratory processes to pilot and commercial scale.
  • Identify and evaluate new technologies and methodologies for plastic recycling and eco-friendly material development.
  • Troubleshoot processing issues and implement corrective actions to ensure product quality and process efficiency.
  • Document research findings, prepare technical reports, and present results to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ensure compliance with all safety regulations and environmental standards in the laboratory and pilot plant.

Required Skills

  • PhD or Master's degree in Polymer Science, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or related field.
  • Minimum of 3 years of industrial experience in plastic processing, polymer compounding, or materials development.
  • Proven expertise in various plastic processing techniques (e.g., extrusion, injection molding, blow molding).
  • Strong understanding of polymer characterization techniques (e.g., DSC, TGA, FTIR, GPC, mechanical testing).
  • Experience with rheology and material flow properties.
  • Knowledge of various plastic recycling technologies (mechanical, chemical, dissolution, pyrolysis).
  • Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced R&D environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with advanced recycling technologies and their industrial application.
  • Familiarity with life cycle assessment (LCA) principles and sustainable material design.
  • Project management experience in an industrial R&D setting.
  • Publications or patents related to polymer recycling or sustainable materials.
  • Experience with statistical experimental design (DOE) and data analysis software.
