Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) Nurse to join our dynamic team in Norfolk, VA. This immediate opening offers an exciting opportunity to provide critical, post-operative care to patients recovering from anesthesia, ensuring their safety and comfort during the crucial immediate recovery phase. The ideal candidate will possess strong assessment skills, critical thinking, and the ability to act quickly and effectively in various medical scenarios.

Key Responsibilities

  • Monitor and assess patients' vital signs, level of consciousness, and pain levels immediately post-anesthesia.
  • Manage airways, administer oxygen, and maintain respiratory function.
  • Administer medications as prescribed, including pain relief, antiemetics, and other post-operative drugs.
  • Identify and respond to potential post-operative complications such as hemorrhage, respiratory depression, and adverse reactions to anesthesia.
  • Educate patients and families on post-operative care instructions and answer their questions.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed patient records, including vital signs, medication administration, and patient responses.
  • Collaborate effectively with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and other healthcare professionals to ensure comprehensive patient care.
  • Adhere to all hospital policies, procedures, and regulatory standards.
  • Provide emotional support and comfort to patients and their families.
  • Assist with patient discharge planning and transitions to other units.

Required Skills

  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Virginia.
  • BLS and ACLS certification required.
  • Minimum of 2 years of recent experience in PACU, Critical Care, or Emergency Room settings.
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
  • Excellent assessment and monitoring skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced and high-stress environment.
  • Proficient in administering medications and operating medical equipment.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Commitment to patient safety and quality care.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
  • CPAN (Certified Post-Anesthesia Nurse) or CCRN (Critical Care Registered Nurse) certification.
  • Experience with various surgical specialties (e.g., general, orthopedic, cardiac).
  • Proficiency with electronic health record (EHR) systems.
