Job Description

Hilton Newcastle Gateshead is looking for an enthusiastic and dedicated Commis Chef to join our vibrant kitchen team. This entry-level position is perfect for someone with a basic understanding of kitchen operations or a recent catering qualification who is ready to learn and grow. You will work alongside experienced chefs, mastering fundamental cooking techniques, food preparation, and kitchen hygiene standards. Key Responsibilities
- Assist senior chefs in the preparation and cooking of various dishes across different sections of the kitchen.
- Learn and master basic cooking techniques, knife skills, and portion control for various ingredients.
- Ensure high standards of hygiene and cleanliness are maintained in all kitchen areas, including equipment and workstations, adhering to HACCP guidelines.
- Support with inventory management, stock rotation, and receiving deliveries to ensure freshness and minimise waste.
- Follow all health and safety regulations, including food safety guidelines, to maintain a safe working environment.
- Prepare ingredients, clean equipment, and organize workstations efficiently for smooth service.
- Contribute to a positive, collaborative, and productive kitchen environment, showing initiative and a willingness to learn.
Required Skills
- Basic understanding of kitchen operations or culinary training (e.g., catering college course).
- Strong passion for food, cooking, and the hospitality industry.
- Ability to work effectively and remain calm in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.
- Excellent teamwork and communication skills to collaborate with colleagues.
- Willingness to learn, take direction, and adapt to new challenges.
- Punctuality, reliability, and a strong work ethic.
- Ability to stand for long periods and lift moderate weights.
Preferred Qualifications
- NVQ Level 1 or 2 in Professional Cookery or equivalent qualification.
- Basic Food Hygiene Certificate (Level 1 or 2).
- Previous experience in a catering or hospitality environment (even voluntary or work experience).
- Knowledge of local and international cuisines.
