Job Description
The McGill University Library is seeking a diligent and enthusiastic Library Support Aide to join our team in Ville-Marie, Montreal. As a Library Support Aide, you will play a crucial role in ensuring our physical collections are well-organized, accessible, and ready for our diverse users. Key Responsibilities
- Shelving and re-shelving books, journals, and other library materials accurately according to classification systems (e.g., Library of Congress).
- Maintaining the neatness and order of shelves, ensuring materials are in their correct locations.
- Assisting with inventory management, including shifting and relocating collection items as needed.
- Identifying damaged materials for repair or withdrawal and reporting discrepancies.
- Assisting patrons with locating materials and basic directional inquiries.
- Contributing to special projects related to collection maintenance and organization.
Required Skills
- Ability to perform repetitive tasks with accuracy and attention to detail.
- Basic computer literacy.
- Strong organizational skills and a methodical approach to work.
- Ability to lift and move library materials (up to 25 lbs).
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Eligibility to work in Canada.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in a library, bookstore, or archival setting.
- Familiarity with library classification systems (e.g., Library of Congress, Dewey Decimal).
- A passion for books and learning.
- Bilingualism (English and French) is an asset.
