Job Description
Join Reedsy as a Virtual Proofreader specializing in self-published books. This contract role is crucial for ensuring the highest quality of manuscripts before they reach readers. You will meticulously review various genres of books, identifying and correcting grammatical errors, punctuation mistakes, spelling inconsistencies, and formatting issues. Key Responsibilities
- Thoroughly proofread self-published manuscripts across diverse genres (fiction, non-fiction, etc.).
- Identify and correct errors in grammar, spelling, punctuation, syntax, and word usage.
- Ensure consistency in style, formatting, and adherence to chosen style guides (e.g., Chicago Manual of Style, APA, or author-specific guidelines).
- Flag any factual inaccuracies or inconsistencies, or potential legal issues for author review.
- Meet agreed-upon deadlines and manage multiple proofreading projects efficiently.
- Provide clear, constructive feedback to authors on the nature of corrections and suggestions for improvement.
Required Skills
- Exceptional command of the English language (grammar, spelling, punctuation, and syntax).
- High attention to detail and a keen eye for errors, even subtle ones.
- Familiarity with common style guides (e.g., Chicago Manual of Style, APA, MLA).
- Proficiency in using word processing software (e.g., Microsoft Word, Google Docs) and tracking changes features.
- Excellent time management and organizational skills to handle multiple deadlines.
- Ability to work independently, maintaining high standards of quality and accuracy.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience as a professional proofreader or editor, particularly with self-published authors or within the publishing industry.
- Formal certification or training in proofreading or copyediting.
