Job Description
Join AECOM as a Paleontology Field Technician, a crucial role supporting our environmental services division on projects involving Bureau of Land Management (BLM) dig sites. This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to significant paleontological discoveries and resource management. You will be responsible for conducting fieldwork, assisting with excavations, and accurately documenting findings. The role requires dedication, attention to detail, and a passion for preserving natural history. Travel to various BLM sites is a key component of this position, with per diem provided to cover living expenses during fieldwork.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct paleontological field surveys, reconnaissance, and monitoring under the supervision of a lead paleontologist.
- Participate in systematic fossil excavation and recovery efforts at BLM-designated sites.
- Accurately record field data, including stratigraphic information, fossil locations, and photographic documentation.
- Assist with the preparation and stabilization of fossil specimens for transport to laboratory facilities.
- Operate and maintain field equipment safely and effectively.
- Adhere strictly to project protocols, safety guidelines, and federal/state regulations governing paleontological resources.
- Prepare daily field logs and contribute to weekly progress reports.
- Collaborate effectively with team members, agency personnel, and other stakeholders.
Required Skills
- Minimum of 6 months of verifiable field experience in paleontology, archaeology, geology, or a related discipline (academic field schools count).
- Ability to identify common fossil types and geological formations.
- Strong observational skills and meticulous attention to detail.
- Proficiency in basic data collection and record-keeping.
- Physical stamina and ability to perform demanding fieldwork in varied terrain and weather conditions.
- Valid driver's license and a clean driving record.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Paleontology, Geology, Archaeology, or a closely related field.
- Experience with GPS and GIS software for mapping and data management.
- Basic first aid and CPR certification.
- Knowledge of federal and state regulations pertaining to paleontological resource management (e.g., PRPA, NEPA).
