Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Safety Coordinator to join our team in Mississauga, Ontario, with a specific focus on supporting and enhancing Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) programs for our refinery operations in Houston. This role is crucial for ensuring compliance with all relevant safety regulations, implementing best practices, and fostering a strong safety culture across the designated refinery assets. The successful candidate will be based out of our Mississauga office, collaborating closely with both local teams and Houston-based operational leadership, potentially involving travel to the Houston site as needed.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive WHS programs and procedures specifically tailored for refinery environments.
  • Conduct regular safety audits, inspections, and risk assessments at the Houston refinery (remotely or on-site as required) to identify hazards and ensure compliance.
  • Investigate incidents, accidents, and near misses, determining root causes and recommending corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Provide expert guidance and support to refinery management and personnel on WHS matters, regulatory requirements, and industry best practices.
  • Organize and deliver safety training sessions, workshops, and awareness campaigns for all levels of refinery staff.
  • Monitor and analyze WHS performance metrics, preparing regular reports for management and identifying areas for improvement.
  • Ensure all WHS documentation, records, and reports are accurately maintained and readily accessible.
  • Liaise with regulatory bodies, internal stakeholders, and external contractors on safety-related issues.
  • Champion a proactive safety culture through communication, engagement, and leadership by example.

Required Skills

  • Minimum 3 years of progressive experience in a WHS role, preferably within the oil & gas, refinery, or heavy industrial sector.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of WHS regulations (OSHA, EPA, and Canadian equivalents as applicable) and industry standards.
  • Proven ability to conduct effective safety audits, incident investigations, and risk assessments.
  • Strong communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and WHS management software.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a dynamic, multi-site environment.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Professional safety certifications such as CRSP, CSP, CIH, or equivalent.
  • Experience with process safety management (PSM) and highly hazardous chemical operations.
  • Familiarity with refinery processes and equipment.
  • Bilingualism (English and Spanish) is an asset due to the Houston focus.
