Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Wound Care Nurse Specialist to join our dynamic team at Ascension St. Vincent Carmel. In this vital role, you will be responsible for providing expert assessment, treatment, and management of various types of wounds, ensuring optimal patient outcomes. This position offers an exciting opportunity to specialize in wound care, with our commitment to providing certification support to help you achieve or maintain your Wound Ostomy Continence Nurse (WOCN) certification. You will work collaboratively with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to develop and implement individualized care plans, educate patients and families, and promote best practices in wound care.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform comprehensive wound assessments, including wound etiology, size, depth, tissue type, exudate, and surrounding skin condition.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate individualized wound care treatment plans based on evidence-based practices.
  • Apply advanced wound care modalities and dressings, adhering to sterile techniques and safety protocols.
  • Monitor wound healing progress, document findings accurately, and adjust care plans as necessary.
  • Educate patients, families, and caregivers on wound prevention, care techniques, and lifestyle modifications.
  • Provide consultation and support to other nursing staff and healthcare professionals regarding complex wound cases.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary team rounds and collaborate with physicians, dietitians, physical therapists, and other specialists.
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation in electronic health records.
  • Contribute to quality improvement initiatives and adherence to regulatory standards.
  • Engage in continuous professional development and utilize provided certification support to achieve or maintain WOCN credentials.

Required Skills

  • Current Indiana Registered Nurse (RN) license
  • Minimum of 3 years of clinical nursing experience, with at least 1 year in medical-surgical, critical care, or a related specialty
  • Strong understanding of wound healing physiology and pathology
  • Excellent assessment, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills
  • Proficient in electronic health record (EHR) systems
  • Exceptional communication, interpersonal, and patient education abilities
  • Commitment to patient-centered care and teamwork

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
  • Previous experience specifically in wound care or a related specialty
  • Wound Ostomy Continence Nurse (WOCN) certification or actively pursuing certification
  • Knowledge of advanced wound care technologies and products
  • Experience with hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) or other specialized wound treatments
