Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Tunneling Engineer to join our dynamic team in Ellesmere Port. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to critical infrastructure projects, working on all phases of tunnel design, construction, and maintenance. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in ensuring the safety, efficiency, and quality of our tunneling operations. We are able to offer Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) and visa sponsorship for qualified international candidates.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in the planning, design, and execution of tunneling projects.
  • Conduct site investigations and geological surveys to assess ground conditions.
  • Perform structural analysis and design calculations for tunnel linings and support systems.
  • Prepare technical reports, specifications, and tender documents.
  • Monitor tunnel construction activities, ensuring compliance with design, safety standards, and project schedules.
  • Collaborate with project managers, clients, contractors, and other engineering disciplines.
  • Identify and resolve technical challenges and design issues encountered during tunneling operations.
  • Utilize advanced software for tunneling design and analysis (e.g., PLAXIS, Rocscience suites).
  • Participate in risk assessments and implement mitigation strategies specific to tunneling.
  • Ensure all work is carried out in accordance with health, safety, and environmental regulations.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Mining Engineering, or a related field.
  • Proven experience (minimum 3 years) in tunneling or underground construction projects.
  • Strong understanding of soil mechanics, rock mechanics, and hydrogeology.
  • Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, Civil 3D).
  • Knowledge of tunneling methods (e.g., TBM, NATM, cut-and-cover).
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Eligibility for professional registration (e.g., CEng) or working towards it.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree or PhD in Geotechnical Engineering or Tunneling.
  • Experience with geotechnical instrumentation and monitoring.
  • Familiarity with UK design standards and specifications.
  • Chartered Engineer status (ICE, IStructE, or similar).
  • Previous experience working on large-scale infrastructure projects.
