Job Description

Join AECOM as an Unmanned Aerial Systems (Drone) Intern and gain hands-on experience in the exciting field of drone-based surveying and mapping. This internship offers a unique opportunity to work alongside experienced professionals, applying cutting-edge technology to real-world infrastructure projects. You will learn about drone operation, data acquisition, processing, and analysis techniques, contributing directly to various surveying and geospatial initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist certified drone pilots with pre-flight planning, flight operations, and post-flight procedures.
  • Support the collection of aerial imagery, LiDAR, and other geospatial data using UAS platforms.
  • Aid in the processing and analysis of drone-acquired data using specialized software (e.g., photogrammetry, GIS, CAD).
  • Contribute to the creation of detailed maps, 3D models, and survey reports.
  • Assist with equipment maintenance, calibration, and inventory management.
  • Learn and adhere to all safety protocols and FAA regulations related to UAS operations.
  • Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and surveyors to understand project requirements and deliverables.
  • Participate in field assignments, potentially including travel to various project sites.
  • Document workflows, findings, and best practices.

Required Skills

  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program in Surveying, Geomatics, Civil Engineering, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Aerospace Engineering, or a related field.
  • Strong interest in Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) technology and its applications in surveying or engineering.
  • Basic understanding of geospatial concepts and mapping principles.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment and independently.
  • Valid driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous coursework or projects related to GIS, CAD, or drone technology.
  • Familiarity with photogrammetry software (e.g., Pix4D, Agisoft Metashape) or GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS Pro, QGIS).
  • Prior experience with manual or automated drone flight, even as a hobbyist.
  • FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certification (or willingness to obtain within internship period).
  • Basic understanding of surveying instruments and data collection methods.
