Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and dedicated Paleontology Technician to join our field excavation and laboratory team. This immediate hire position offers an exciting opportunity for an individual passionate about uncovering ancient life forms and contributing to significant scientific research. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in all aspects of fossil recovery, from initial excavation to preliminary lab preparation and meticulous data collection. You will work closely with experienced paleontologists and researchers, gaining invaluable hands-on experience in diverse geological settings.
Key Responsibilities
- Participate actively in field excavations, including manual digging, screening sediments, and identifying fossil remains under supervision.
- Carefully extract, jacket, and safely transport fossil specimens from remote field sites to the laboratory.
- Assist with initial fossil preparation, cleaning, and basic conservation techniques in a laboratory setting.
- Accurately record detailed field data, including stratigraphic information, GPS coordinates, geological context, and photographic documentation.
- Perform routine maintenance on field equipment and tools, ensuring they are in optimal working condition.
- Adhere strictly to all safety protocols and best practices in both field and laboratory environments.
- Assist with the organization, cataloging, and inventory of fossil specimens and associated data.
- Contribute to daily field reports and maintain effective communication with the project team.
Required Skills
- Demonstrated physical stamina and ability to perform strenuous fieldwork in various outdoor conditions (e.g., heat, cold, uneven terrain).
- Exceptional attention to detail and ability to follow complex instructions and protocols precisely.
- Basic understanding of geological principles, stratigraphy, and an eagerness to learn paleontological field methods.
- Ability to work effectively, both independently and collaboratively, as an integral part of a diverse team.
- Excellent observational, problem-solving, and communication skills.
- Possession of a valid driver's license and a clean driving record, with the ability to operate field vehicles (e.g., 4×4 trucks).
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or coursework in Paleontology, Geology, Biology, Anthropology, or a closely related scientific field.
- Prior hands-on experience in paleontological fieldwork, archaeological excavation, or similar outdoor scientific data collection.
- Proficiency with GPS devices, digital cameras, and basic mapping software.
- Current First Aid and CPR certification.
- Experience with various hand tools and basic power tools used in excavation and specimen preparation.
