Job Description
Are you a motivated 14-year-old looking for your first job experience in a supportive and engaging environment? The Hawaii State Public Library System is seeking enthusiastic Teens Library Pages to help us keep our collection organized and accessible for the community. This is a fantastic opportunity to gain valuable work experience, develop organizational skills, and contribute to your local library. As a Library Page, you will play a crucial role in maintaining the order and flow of our extensive collection. Your primary duties will involve accurately shelving books, magazines, and other materials, as well as sorting returned items to ensure they are ready for their proper place. This is an on-site position where you will be an integral part of our library team.
Key Responsibilities
- Accurately shelve books, magazines, DVDs, and other library materials according to the Dewey Decimal System or alphabetical order.
- Sort returned materials and prepare them for shelving.
- Maintain the neatness and order of shelves, ensuring items are in their correct locations (shelf-reading).
- Shift materials on shelves to make space and improve accessibility.
- Assist in keeping library public areas tidy and welcoming.
- May assist patrons with basic questions regarding material location or library layout.
Required Skills
- Must be exactly 14 years old at the time of application.
- Ability to read and understand English clearly.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions effectively.
- Basic organizational skills and a tidy approach to tasks.
- Physical ability to stand, walk, bend, reach, push, and lift up to 10-15 pounds regularly.
- Reliability and a strong work ethic.
Preferred Qualifications
- A genuine interest in books, reading, and the library environment.
- Prior volunteer experience, especially in an organized setting.
- Basic computer literacy is a plus, though not required for this specific role.
- A proactive attitude and willingness to learn.
