Job Description
Are you a passionate and dedicated paleontologist with a keen interest in the Plio-Pleistocene epoch? The University of South Florida’s Department of Geosciences is seeking a highly motivated Florida Fossil Investigator to join our dynamic research team. This role offers an exceptional opportunity to contribute to significant discoveries related to Florida’s ancient fauna and environments, with a particular emphasis on the Pliocene and Pleistocene periods. The successful candidate will be instrumental in identifying, excavating, documenting, and analyzing fossil remains from various sites across Florida, primarily focusing on marine and terrestrial vertebrates of the Plio-Pleistocene era. This position requires extensive fieldwork, meticulous lab work, and collaboration with a team of esteemed scientists and students. Key Responsibilities
- Lead and participate in paleontological fieldwork across Florida, including site identification, excavation, and recovery of Plio-Pleistocene fossils.
- Document fossil finds meticulously in the field, including photography, GPS data collection, and detailed notes.
- Prepare, clean, conserve, and curate fossil specimens in the laboratory, adhering to professional standards.
- Identify and classify fossil materials, particularly focusing on Plio-Pleistocene megafauna and microfauna.
- Maintain accurate records and databases of fossil collections and field activities.
- Assist in the preparation of research reports, presentations, and scientific publications.
- Operate and maintain specialized field and lab equipment.
- Ensure compliance with all safety protocols and environmental regulations during fieldwork.
- Mentor and supervise student assistants and volunteers during field and lab activities.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, including geologists, archaeologists, and environmental scientists.
Required Skills
- Proven expertise in vertebrate paleontology, with specific knowledge of Plio-Pleistocene fauna.
- Demonstrated proficiency in paleontological excavation and field recovery techniques.
- Experience with fossil preparation, conservation, and curation.
- Strong observational and analytical skills for fossil identification and interpretation.
- Proficiency in geological mapping, stratigraphy, and sedimentology.
- Ability to work effectively and safely in challenging outdoor conditions for extended periods.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Valid U.S. Driver's License and ability to operate 4×4 vehicles.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree or higher in Paleontology, Geology, Evolutionary Biology, or a related field.
- Experience with GIS software for mapping and data management.
- Familiarity with Florida's specific geological formations and paleontological sites.
- Prior experience supervising field crews or lab assistants.
- Record of scientific publication or conference presentations.
- Certification in CPR and First Aid.
