Job Description
We are seeking a skilled and passionate Guitar Technician to join our team in Saint Paul. This role is crucial for maintaining the quality and playability of a wide range of guitars, from entry-level acoustics to high-end electrics. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of guitar mechanics, electronics, and woodworking, with a keen eye for detail and a commitment to providing excellent service to our customers. This position focuses heavily on both retail instrument setup and customer repair work within our busy music store environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform routine setups, adjustments, and intonation on acoustic and electric guitars, basses, and other stringed instruments.
- Diagnose and repair a variety of issues including fret work (leveling, crowning, polishing, refrets), neck resets, structural repairs, and electronic troubleshooting.
- Handle instrument restrings, cleaning, and general maintenance.
- Consult with customers to understand their repair needs, provide accurate estimates, and explain repair processes.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe workspace.
- Order and manage parts inventory for guitar repairs.
- Provide technical support and advice to sales staff and customers.
- Ensure all repairs meet Schmitt Music's high standards for quality and customer satisfaction.
Required Skills
- Minimum 2 years of professional experience in guitar repair or lutherie.
- Proficiency in fret leveling, crowning, and polishing.
- Strong understanding of guitar electronics (pickups, wiring, switches, pots).
- Familiarity with various guitar brands, models, and construction methods.
- Excellent manual dexterity and attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple repair projects simultaneously.
- Strong communication and customer service skills.
- Proficient in using hand and power tools safely and effectively.
Preferred Qualifications
- Graduation from a recognized lutherie or instrument repair program.
- Experience with advanced repairs such as neck resets, crack repairs, and custom modifications.
- Knowledge of other stringed instruments (e.g., mandolins, banjos, ukuleles).
- Experience in a retail music store environment.
- Passion for music and playing guitar.
