Job Description

We are seeking a meticulous and dedicated Historical Document Tagger to join our Digital Archive Project team. In this vital role, you will be responsible for accurately classifying, categorizing, and tagging a wide array of historical documents to enhance their discoverability and accessibility within our digital archives. This position involves working with various formats, including manuscripts, photographs, maps, and government records, ensuring consistency and adherence to established archival standards and metadata schemas. Your work will directly contribute to making Canada’s rich historical heritage available to researchers, scholars, and the public worldwide.

Key Responsibilities

  • Accurately tag and categorize historical documents according to predefined metadata standards and schemas.
  • Review, interpret, and process diverse document types, including textual, visual, and audio-visual materials.
  • Ensure consistency and quality control in tagging to maintain data integrity across the digital archive.
  • Collaborate with archivists and subject matter experts to resolve complex tagging issues and refine workflows.
  • Contribute to the development and improvement of tagging guidelines and best practices.
  • Utilize specialized software and digital tools for archival processing and data entry.
  • Report on tagging progress and identify areas for efficiency improvements.
  • Adhere to strict confidentiality and security protocols for sensitive historical materials.

Required Skills

  • Demonstrated strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Proficiency in data entry and database management.
  • Ability to interpret and understand historical context.
  • Basic computer literacy and comfort with digital tools.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills in English or French.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Background or strong interest in history, archival studies, library science, or a related field.
  • Experience with metadata standards (e.g., Dublin Core, MARC, EAD) is an asset.
  • Familiarity with digital archiving software or content management systems.
  • Bilingualism (English and French) is a significant asset.
  • Experience working with primary source materials.
