Job Description
Are you eager to learn a valuable, highly skilled trade from the ground up? Thrifty Foods is offering a unique opportunity to join our team as a Meat Processing / Butcher’s Apprentice. This full-time, on-site role in Nanaimo will immerse you in the art and science of meat preparation, cutting, and processing. You’ll work alongside experienced butchers, learning traditional techniques and modern practices in a fast-paced retail environment. This is an entry-level position designed for individuals with a strong work ethic, a keen interest in the food industry, and a desire to build a rewarding career.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist experienced butchers with the preparation and cutting of various meat products (beef, pork, poultry, etc.).
- Learn to identify different cuts of meat and their appropriate uses.
- Operate and maintain meat cutting equipment safely and efficiently.
- Ensure all products meet Thrifty Foods' high standards for quality and presentation.
- Follow strict food safety and sanitation guidelines at all times.
- Assist with inventory management, stock rotation, and receiving of meat products.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area, including equipment and display cases.
- Provide friendly and knowledgeable customer service, answering questions about meat products.
- Participate in ongoing training and development programs.
- Adhere to all company policies and procedures.
Required Skills
- Strong work ethic and a positive attitude.
- Eagerness to learn a new trade and commit to a structured apprenticeship.
- Ability to follow instructions and work effectively in a team environment.
- Excellent attention to detail and precision.
- Physical stamina and ability to lift heavy objects (up to 50 lbs) and stand for extended periods.
- Basic communication skills.
- Reliable and punctual.
Preferred Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Basic understanding of food safety principles (e.g., FoodSafe certification).
- Previous experience in a retail or food service environment.
- Demonstrated interest in culinary arts or the meat industry.
