Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Mental Health Facility Porter to join our team in Sunderland. This crucial role involves safely transporting patients, equipment, and medical supplies within our mental health facilities. You will be a vital part of ensuring a safe, calm, and supportive environment for both patients and staff. A calm approach, excellent communication skills, and a strong understanding of safety protocols are paramount. This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute directly to patient well-being in a sensitive and rewarding setting.
Key Responsibilities
- Safely transport patients, who may be experiencing mental health challenges, to and from various departments, ensuring their comfort and dignity at all times.
- Move medical equipment, laboratory samples, patient records, and other materials efficiently and securely throughout the facility.
- Provide compassionate assistance to patients, staff, and visitors, maintaining a professional and reassuring presence.
- Adhere strictly to all health, safety, and infection control policies and procedures, especially those relevant to a mental health environment.
- Respond promptly to requests for portering services, prioritizing tasks based on urgency and clinical need.
- Communicate effectively with nursing staff, medical professionals, and other team members to coordinate movements and ensure smooth operations.
- Assist with minor maintenance tasks or general tidiness in designated areas as required.
- Ensure all patient transfers are conducted with the utmost discretion and respect for privacy.
- Actively participate in training and development opportunities to enhance skills and knowledge related to mental health support and safety.
Required Skills
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to remain calm and reassuring in potentially challenging situations.
- Strong understanding of the importance of patient confidentiality and privacy.
- Ability to follow instructions meticulously and adhere to strict safety protocols.
- Physical fitness and stamina to handle the demands of transporting patients and equipment.

- Basic literacy and numeracy skills for understanding schedules and record-keeping.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- High level of reliability and punctuality.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in a portering role, preferably within a healthcare or mental health setting.
- Knowledge of basic first aid and manual handling techniques.
- Understanding of mental health conditions and the specific needs of patients in a mental health facility.
- Possession of a full UK driving licence (desirable, but not essential for all roles).
- NVQ Level 2 in Health and Social Care or a related field.
