Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic Observational Astronomy Intern to join our team at the Montana State University Observatory. This internship offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in observational astronomy, working alongside faculty and researchers on real-world scientific projects. The successful candidate will assist with the operation and maintenance of astronomical telescopes, collect and process observational data, and contribute to ongoing research efforts. This role is ideal for students passionate about astronomy and eager to develop their practical skills in an active research environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with the setup, operation, and calibration of optical telescopes and associated instrumentation.
- Collect and manage astronomical data from various observational targets.
- Perform initial data reduction and analysis using specialized software tools.
- Support the maintenance and troubleshooting of observatory equipment.
- Maintain detailed records of observations, instrument configurations, and data processing steps.
- Participate in team meetings, seminars, and scientific discussions.
- Contribute to the preparation of research summaries or presentations under supervision.
Required Skills
- Currently enrolled in a Bachelor's or Master's degree program in Astronomy, Physics, Astrophysics, or a related field.
- Demonstrated foundational understanding of astronomical concepts and observational techniques.
- Proficiency with scientific programming languages such as Python or MATLAB for data analysis.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a research team.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience with optical telescope operation or astronomical imaging.
- Familiarity with astronomical data reduction pipelines (e.g., IRAF, Astropy).
- Prior participation in research projects or laboratory work.
- Experience with Linux/Unix operating systems.
