Job Description
We are seeking a highly analytical and data-driven Algorithm Performance Contributor to join our team in Ottawa. In this role, you will be crucial in analyzing, monitoring, and optimizing the performance of Shopify’s core algorithms that power everything from search and recommendations to fraud detection and inventory management. You will work closely with data scientists, engineers, and product managers to ensure our algorithms are efficient, fair, and deliver maximum value to our merchants and buyers. Your work will involve deep dives into performance metrics, root cause analysis, and contributing to the strategic direction of algorithmic improvements.
Key Responsibilities
- Analyze the performance of existing algorithms using quantitative methods and statistical techniques.
- Develop and maintain robust monitoring systems, dashboards, and alerts for algorithm health and key performance indicators (KPIs).
- Identify performance bottlenecks, biases, and areas for improvement in various algorithmic systems.
- Conduct in-depth investigations into performance anomalies and provide actionable insights and recommendations.
- Collaborate with data scientists and engineers to design, implement, and analyze A/B tests and other experiments related to algorithm changes.
- Communicate complex analytical findings, insights, and recommendations clearly and effectively to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of data analysis methodologies, tools, and best practices within the team.
- Support the deployment and post-launch monitoring of new algorithm features and iterations.
Required Skills
- Strong proficiency in SQL for complex data querying and manipulation.
- Expertise in a scripting language (e.g., Python, R) for data analysis, statistical modeling, and visualization.
- Solid understanding of statistical concepts, hypothesis testing, and experimental design (A/B testing).
- Experience with data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, Looker, Mode) to create impactful dashboards.
- Proven ability to conduct root cause analysis and problem-solve complex data and algorithmic issues.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to convey technical information to diverse audiences.
- Familiarity with core algorithmic principles and data structures.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in a data analysis, business intelligence, or similar analytical role.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Economics, or a related quantitative field.
- Experience with large-scale data processing frameworks (e.g., Spark, Hive, Presto).
- Familiarity with machine learning concepts, models, and evaluation metrics.
- Prior experience in an e-commerce, SaaS, or platform-based technology company.
- Experience working with production-level data pipelines and data warehousing concepts.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
