Job Description
Are you a high-energy, enthusiastic student looking for a rewarding summer job? The YMCA of the National Capital Region is seeking dedicated Outdoor Camp Helpers to join our dynamic team in Kanata for the summer season. This entry-level position is perfect for individuals passionate about working with children, enjoying the outdoors, and contributing to a positive camp experience. You will play a crucial role in ensuring the safety and engagement of campers aged 4-12, assisting camp counselors, and facilitating a variety of exciting outdoor activities.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist Camp Counselors in leading and supervising groups of children during daily camp activities, including sports, arts and crafts, games, and outdoor adventures.
- Actively participate in and facilitate all camp programs with enthusiasm and a positive attitude.
- Ensure the safety and well-being of all campers at all times, adhering to YMCA policies and procedures.
- Help set up and clean up activity areas, ensuring equipment is properly maintained and stored.
- Serve as a positive role model for campers, promoting respect, inclusivity, and teamwork.
- Support campers with personal needs, such as washroom breaks, hydration, and sunscreen application.
- Communicate effectively with camp staff, supervisors, and, when necessary, parents/guardians.
- Attend all mandatory staff training sessions prior to and during the camp season.
Required Skills
- High level of energy, enthusiasm, and a positive attitude.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with children aged 4-12.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Strong sense of responsibility and reliability.
- Patience and adaptability in a fast-paced outdoor environment.
- Current Standard First Aid and CPR-C certification (or willingness to obtain before start date).
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience working with children in a camp, recreational, or educational setting.
- Enrollment in or completion of a post-secondary program related to recreation, education, social work, or a related field.
- Knowledge of various camp games, songs, and activities.
