Job Description
The City of Bismarck is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented individual to join our team as a Trainee Weights & Measures Inspector. This entry-level position is ideal for someone looking to start a career in public service, ensuring fair commerce and consumer protection within the community. Under close supervision, the Trainee Inspector will learn to perform inspections, tests, and calibrations of various commercial weighing and measuring devices, ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal regulations. This role involves both field work and administrative duties, providing comprehensive training in all aspects of weights and measures enforcement.
Key Responsibilities
- Undergo comprehensive training on weights and measures laws, regulations, and inspection procedures.
- Assist in conducting routine inspections, tests, and calibrations of commercial weighing and measuring devices (e.g., scales, gas pumps, retail scanners).
- Learn to identify and document non-compliant devices and practices.
- Accurately complete inspection reports and maintain detailed records.
- Communicate effectively with business owners and the public regarding inspection findings and regulatory requirements.
- Operate and maintain specialized testing equipment.
- Participate in investigations of consumer complaints related to weights and measures.
- Adhere to all safety protocols and departmental policies.
Required Skills
- High school diploma or GED.
- Valid driver's license with a good driving record.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to follow precise instructions.
- Basic mathematical aptitude.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Physical ability to lift and carry testing equipment (up to 50 lbs), bend, stoop, and stand for extended periods.
Preferred Qualifications
- Associates degree in a technical field or related discipline.
- Experience in a field requiring meticulous record-keeping or technical aptitude.
- Familiarity with local government operations or regulatory enforcement.
- Proficiency with basic computer applications (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).
