Job Description
SWCA Environmental Consultants is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Paleontology Crew Chief to join our dynamic team in El Paso, TX. This is a critical leadership role responsible for overseeing field operations, ensuring scientific integrity, and contributing to significant paleontological discoveries across diverse landscapes. The Crew Chief will lead field crews, manage project logistics, ensure safety protocols are followed, and contribute to the analysis and reporting of paleontological findings. This role requires extensive field experience, strong leadership capabilities, and a deep understanding of paleontological methods and regulatory compliance.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage paleontological field crews on various projects, ensuring adherence to project scopes, budgets, and schedules.
- Conduct paleontological resource surveys, monitoring, and data recovery operations in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations.
- Implement and enforce strict safety protocols for all field personnel and operations.
- Oversee the accurate collection, documentation, and curation of paleontological data and specimens.
- Train and mentor junior paleontologists and field technicians.
- Prepare field notes, daily logs, and contribute to technical reports and site forms.
- Communicate effectively with project managers, clients, and regulatory agencies.
- Operate and maintain field equipment, including GPS units and mapping tools.
- Manage logistical aspects of field projects, including equipment preparation, travel arrangements, and accommodation.
Required Skills
- Minimum of a Bachelor's degree in Paleontology, Geology, Earth Sciences, or a related field.
- Proven experience (4+ years) leading paleontological field crews and managing projects.
- Strong knowledge of vertebrate and/or invertebrate paleontology, fossil identification, and excavation techniques.
- Proficiency with GPS/GIS technologies for mapping and data collection.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to conduct strenuous fieldwork in diverse environmental conditions (e.g., extreme temperatures, rugged terrain).
- Valid U.S. Driver's License and ability to operate 4×4 vehicles.
- Familiarity with safety standards and practices for field operations.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree or Ph.D. in Paleontology or a related discipline.
- Experience working on projects in the southwestern United States (specifically Texas, New Mexico, Arizona).
- Familiarity with federal and state environmental regulations (e.g., NEPA, NHPA, PRPA).
- Experience with advanced paleontological laboratory techniques.
- First Aid/CPR certification.
