Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and physically fit Day Surgery Porter to join our bustling surgical department. This is a fast-paced role primarily focused on morning shifts, ensuring the smooth and efficient flow of patients, equipment, and supplies within the day surgery unit. You will be a vital part of the team, supporting clinical staff and contributing directly to the patient experience by providing a safe and timely service. The ideal candidate will be reliable, proactive, and able to work effectively under pressure in a busy healthcare setting.
Key Responsibilities
- Transporting patients safely and comfortably between wards, theatres, and departments using wheelchairs, trolleys, and beds.
- Assisting clinical staff with the transfer of patients, including those requiring specialist handling.
- Moving medical equipment, supplies, and specimens throughout the day surgery unit and to other areas as required.
- Ensuring equipment is cleaned, checked, and readily available for use, reporting any defects promptly.
- Responding efficiently to urgent requests and emergency situations, demonstrating initiative and calm under pressure.
- Maintaining a tidy and organized working environment within the portering department and associated areas.
- Adhering to all health and safety regulations, infection control policies, and hospital procedures.
Required Skills
- Physical fitness and stamina to perform manual handling tasks frequently.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to interact with patients, visitors, and staff.
- Ability to work effectively and remain calm in a fast-paced, demanding environment.
- Strong sense of responsibility, reliability, and punctuality.
- Ability to follow instructions accurately and work independently as well as part of a team.
- Basic understanding of health and safety principles within a healthcare setting.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in a portering role, particularly within a hospital or healthcare environment.
- Demonstrable experience in manual handling techniques.
- Familiarity with hospital layouts and procedures.
- Basic IT literacy for communicating and logging tasks.
