Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and proactive School Grounds Caretaker / Handyman to join our team in Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent. This vital role involves maintaining the school premises and grounds to a high standard, ensuring a safe, clean, and welcoming environment for students, staff, and visitors. The successful candidate will be responsible for a wide range of tasks, from groundskeeping to general maintenance and repairs. This position offers term-time working options, providing an excellent work-life balance for the right individual.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform general grounds maintenance, including gardening, landscaping, litter picking, and ensuring pathways are clear and safe.
- Carry out minor repairs and maintenance tasks across the school premises, such as basic plumbing, carpentry, painting, and electrical checks.
- Conduct regular health and safety checks, identifying and reporting any hazards or maintenance issues promptly.
- Ensure the security of the school buildings and grounds, including locking and unlocking procedures and responding to alarm activations as required.
- Undertake seasonal tasks, such as gritting pathways in winter or preparing sports fields in summer.
- Maintain tools, equipment, and machinery in good working order, ensuring safe operation at all times.
- Assist with the movement of furniture and equipment for school events or classroom changes.
- Liaise with external contractors for more complex repairs or maintenance projects.
Required Skills
- Proven experience in general maintenance, caretaking, or groundskeeping.
- Proficiency in basic DIY tasks and use of common hand and power tools.
- Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting, bending, and working outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Basic understanding of health and safety regulations pertinent to a school environment.
- Strong sense of responsibility, reliability, and punctuality.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills to interact with staff, students, and visitors.
- A clean and valid driving license is preferred for local errands and material collection.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience working within a school or educational setting.
- Relevant trade qualifications (e.g., NVQ in maintenance, plumbing, or carpentry).
- Certification in First Aid or emergency response.
- Knowledge of PAT testing and fire safety procedures.
